What is an Australian Partner visa?

A Partner visa is one of the most common pathways for a non-Australian to be able to live in Australia permanently.

A partner visa application is usually a two-stage process. The first stage is to lodge a combined application for a
temporary partner visa and a permanent partner visa. Initially, a temporary partner visa may be granted.

The second stage can be lodged two years after the first stage. The application requires you to show that you are still in a relationship with your sponsor. If the application is successful, a permanent partner visa can then be granted.

The subclasses below are separated into onshore (applied from within Australia) and offshore (applied from outside Australia).

Subclass 820 Temporary Visa

Subclass 801 Permanent Visa

Who is eligible for a Partner visa?

A Partner visa is available to spouses or de facto Partners of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens. If you are in a genuine, committed relationship with one of the above, you may be able to apply.

You may also be able to include eligible family members in your application.

What are the requirements for the Partner visa?

Applicants for the Partner visa need to meet several different requirements. These include:

Each requirement is assessed against strict criteria set by the Australian government. Failing any test can result in the visa application being refused, and your application fee will likely not be refunded. You can also be barred from applying for this visa again.
