India to Australia Travel Ban

As of today (3 May 2021) India is the first country to be added to High Risk Country Travel Pause list. This means that any person who has been in India within the last 14 days cannot enter Australia without an exemption. This applies to Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia and foreign nationals. The ban will be reviewed on 15 May 2021. So who is exempt from the ban?

Who is exempt from the India to Australia travel ban?

The following persons are exempt from the travel ban:

  • a member of the crew of an aircraft or vessel

  • persons travelling on an Australian Government facilitated flight

Why has the Australian Government put this ban in place?

According to Foreign Minister Marise Payne 57% of positive cases in Australian hotel quarantine had been arrivals from India. As a result the burdon on health and medical services in states and territoties has been significant.

What are the penalties for breaching the travel ban?

Any person who breaches the ban could face up to 5 years in prison as well a fine of up to $66,000.

When will the ban end?

The Australian Government will review the ban on 15 May 2021 and it’s possible that the ban may be extended. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has expressed the desire for the Australian Government to get repatriation flights from India back up and running as soon as it is safe to do so.

This is an unprecidented step by the Australian Government as it is the first time that citizens of Australia have been banned from entering Australia. Subscibe to this blog for updates.
