How Does The Federal Budget 2021-2022 Impact Family Immigration?

On Tuesday the 11th of May the Australian Government announced the federal budget for the 2021-2022 financial year. How does the budget impact family immigration? Not a lot it seems.

Australian Border Closure

The Government expect the Australian border to remain closed for at least another 12 months. It’s possible that Australia could open travel bubbles with countries such as Singapore and the Pacific Islands as they have with New Zealand, however no specific announcements have been made.

Migration Program Number

The migration program planning level for 2021-2022 will remain at 160,000 overall with 77,300 places alocated to family visas.

The main focus will be onshore visa applications in particular partner visas, which means that processing times will continue to be quicker than usual. The humanitarian program will be maintaned at 13,750 places.

Support For Migrant and Refugee Woman

Funding is being allocated to improve the safety of migrant and refugee woman who are the victims of family violence. This should increase the capacity for early intervention, as well as provide social and economic support. A pilot program will be launched to support temporary visa holders in exploring visa options where they are not reliant on an abusive partner.

Parent Visa Validity

The validity period for the subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa will be extended by 18 months for persons who are unable to use the visa due to travel restrictions.

Visa Application Fees

There have been no announcements regarding changes to visa application fees. Stay tuned to this blog for further updates.
