What is a 864 Visa?

The subclass 864 visa, also known as the Contributory Aged Parent visa, allows the aged parent of an eligible Australian resident to live in Australia with their family. They can stay in Australia permanently, gain access to Medicare, the Australian public healthcare system, and may eventually be able to apply for Australian citizenship.

Applying for an 864 Visa

Applying for an 864 visa is typically a multi-step process.
The first step involves gathering and preparing all the documentation, including proof of how the applicant meets each of the eligibility criteria, and applying for the visa. A temporary bridging visa is granted to applicants while the application is considered.
From here, the application will progress through a queue. Further information may be requested by the Australian Government during this stage.
Eventually, when it reaches the end of the queue, the government will make a decision on the visa outcome. If successful, the 864 visa will then be granted.

Benefits of an 864 Visa

The 864 visa typically grants:
  • The right to live, work and study in Australia on a permanent basis
  • Unrestricted travel rights to and from Australia for up to 5 years (further travel rights can be requested after this)
  • The right to access Australia’s public healthcare system, Medicare
  • The potential to eventually apply for Australian citizenship
Applicants can also include eligible members of their family in their application, if desired.
