What is a Aged Parent Visa?

The subclass 804 visa, also known as the Aged Parent visa, lets the aged parent of an eligible Australian resident live in Australia permanently. They will be able to stay in Australia, enrol in the public healthcare system once the Aged Parent visa is granted, and may eventually be able to apply for Australian citizenship.

Applying for an Aged Parent Visa

Applying for an Aged Parent visa is typically a multi-step process.

The first step involves gathering and preparing all the documentation, including proof of how the applicant meets each of the eligibility criteria, and applying for the visa. Applicants are granted a Bridging Visa with work rights while their application is considered.

The application will then be assessed for eligibility. If it passes all the tests – a process which can takes some years – it will be placed into a queue. Further information may be requested by the Australian government during this stage.
Eventually, if the application reaches the end of the queue and when a new visa becomes available, the application will be assessed again. If it passes, the Aged Parent visa can be granted.

Benefits of an Aged Parent Visa

When granted, the 804 visa can give:
  • The right to live, work and study in Australia, permanently
  • The ability to travel to and from Australia for 5 years (further travel rights can be requested)
  • The right to apply for access to Medicare, Australia’s public health care system
  • The potential to apply for Australian citizenship
Applicants can also include members of their family in the application.
